Hawa mahal
Built in 1799, the Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, is one of the major landmarks of Jaipur. This five storey building, which looks out over the main street of the old city, is a stunning example of Rajput artistry, with its pink semi octagonal and delicately honeycombed sandstone windows. It was originally built to enable ladies of the royal household, to watch the everyday life and processions of the city. The palace was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, and is part of the City Palace complex.

The façade of the palace resembles a pyramid. The palace comprises five stories. There are nearly 953 tiny windows carved out of intricate lattice work. Another term for these pink windows made of sandstone is ‘jharokha’. These windows are extremely stylish and resemble a mammoth honeycomb. There is tremendous air circulation through the windows, due to Mughal designing. The air circulation ensures that the palace is always cool. The balconies have small screens. The arched roof in combination with hanging cornices augments the beauty of Hawa Mahal Jaipur. The palace has an outline of a pyramid, which increases its magnificence.
Hawa Mahal Jaipur is supposed to have been constructed for the women belonging to the Royal Family. These women were required to use a veil or ‘purdah’. The tiny windows and balconies that are screened enabled the women to catch a glimpse of processions and various activities occurring in the streets. In such a way, the women could appreciate freedom despite being veiled.
